    APGA RECONCILES???? Empty APGA RECONCILES????

Post by nicegospel Mon Aug 05, 2013 11:46 am

Once upon a time, they were once best of friends, political allies and confidants. Destiny and resilience in fighting one course or the other brought them together.

They weathered the political storms on various occasions since 2003 when Mr. Peter Obi came on board to show active interest in the governance of Anambra State. On various occasions, Chief Victor Umeh, National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), had fought the political battle of Mr. Peter Obi, as if it was his personal battle.

It was then surprising that recently, the two political love birds went separate ways in a dangerous political warfare that caught political watchers napping.

When the gladiators rolled out their drums of war and fanned various embers of political battle, little did their followers know that there was going to be an abrupt solution to their seemingly insoluble fight. Interestingly, only those with political vision could apparently see an end to the two-year disagreement between Mr. Peter Obi and his national chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, after the duo had engaged in unholy war against each other in various courts across the country and on the pages of newspapers.

While the political war lasted, there was division among the two gladiators, as the political party got immersed in intractable crisis shortly after the death of the leader of the party, the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in 2011.

Expectedly, last Monday in a dramatic twist to the crisis, the duo of Mr. Obi and Chief Victor Umeh, in a solemnisation of political matrimony at the Awka Government House, kissed and embraced each other apparently to declare an end to the two-year old crisis for now.

But many political analysts still believe that the recent development in APGA was merely a cosmetic peace arrangement made by the two gladiators after constant intervention by some prominent Igbo leaders and clergymen because of the coming local government and governorship elections.

However, the submission of the two political players to sheathe their swords after they had washed their dirty linings in the public may not have come as a big surprise to the party followers and political analysts, who have been inundated with the slogan that there is no permanent enemy in politics but permanent interest.

Speaking to Daily Sun on the recent peace deal between Mr. Obi and Chief Victor Umeh, a political analyst, Chief Dom Onyiuke, described the peace deal as clinically manipulated by the duo to play with the intelligence of the party faithful as well as browbeat the opposition to submission.

Chief Onyiuke said there were still some insoluble mind-boggling jigsaws that have not been answered by the duo on whether the object of the crisis had been completely removed or the cause of the political impasse had been completely solved.

He also raised a poser on the disposition of the two people to accept each other’s interests especially as it concerns the coming governorship election since the just concluded war was a part of the fall out of who succeeds Governor Peter Obi when his tenure ends in March next year.

From the foregoing, therefore, it is indeed a peace of the graveyards for both Chief Umeh and Peter Obi since the object of conflict that brought about the war ab initio so has not been removed nor solved especially with the different interests of the political gladiators concerning the November 16 governorship election.

For Chief Clement Ukwuaka, a lecturer at the Department of Political Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the reconciliation between Umeh and Obi was manipulated and managed to give peace a chance and as well save the dying political party which was fast assuming a defunct political party before the exercise.

However, Daily Sun gathered that after several efforts made by both Catholic and Anglican Bishops from Anambra state could not do the magic because of various interests pervading the peace meeting where the Bishops allegedly could not drop their interests to make a peace deal come to pass, the ceasefire deal was shifted elsewhere.

Severally however, there were series of peace meetings allegedly conveyed by both Catholic and Anglican Bishops for Peter Obi and Chief Victor Umeh which ended in deadlock because the people that conveyed the meeting could not agree to drop their interests of who succeeds Obi from any of the denomination.

A close source to the Bishops told Daily Sun that in one of the meetings, the Catholic Bishops insisted that the next governor of the state must come from their fold while the Anglican Bishops were also insisting that the Catholics have had their fair share in the governance of the state since the time of Dr. Chris Ngige.

After the Bishops in Anambra failed to do the magic, the battle and peace talks shifted from the state to Enugu where the two political gladiators were able to see reasons with the Bishops to drop their war for the interest of the majority of Ndigbo who have taken APGA as a political party with Igbo agenda and interest.

During one of the meetings held in Enugu, it was gathered that the two Catholic Bishops of Enugu and Awgu and outspoken Anglican Bishop of Enugu, Emmanuel Chukwuma were allegedly seen calling on the two political gladiators to come together and drop their animosity towards the fight to sustenance of the party which was fast drifting towards political oblivion. Interestingly, the meeting paid off after constant persuasions from these clergymen on Obi and Umeh.

The duo agreed to give peace a chance but not without sustaining serious political bruises. Many believed that the recent ceasefire deal between Obi and Umeh was not unconnected to the fact that Mr. Obi lost his battles at the Appeal Court to permanently seal off Umeh’s political fate in APGA to go the way of all political mortals like Chief Chekwas Okorie and the embattled factional chairman of the party, Chief Maxi Okwu.

Having lost favour in the face of the court which has remained his friend for decades, Obi could not have pitched his tent with Chekwas Okorie in his new party or romance with Maxi Okwu whose political future looks bleak and like an aborted pregnancy. The best option left for Obi therefore was to go back like the proverbial prodigal son to Umeh and since he knew that both him and Umeh needed each other for survival, it became very imperative that both of them accepted the wise counsel from the clergymen to sheathe their swords for their own political future and reputation.

The new APGA and the fate of Okwu’s faction

While the crisis lasted, so many things happened within the party at both state and national levels. At the state level, Mr. Obi hurriedly removed the state Executive of APGA led by Chief Mike Kwentor and put his own man, Chief Egwuoyibo Okoye in charge of the party in the state. As if that was not enough, his faction also proceeded to that national convention at the Women Development Centre, Awka where they allegedly elected Chief Maxi Okwu as the authentic national chairman of the party.

While Chief Umeh was still grappling with the judgment of the Enugu High court presided over by Justice Innocent Umezulike, the Chief Judge of Enugu State, his traducers went into the streets, making a hell of noise, celebrating the seeming political downfall of him evident in the chieftaincy title conferred on the man that took Umeh to court by his people in Enugu State.

Now, with the reconciliation, Mr. Peter Obi and Chief Victor Umeh have now agreed to come together and work together as a team to make the party work and ready to win elections not only in Anambra but other states across the country.

With the development, Chief Maxi Okwu who was once swimming in ocean of political blessing is now at a crossroads. Another impending crisis in APGA Though there is seemingly peace deal and political ceasefire between Mr. Peter Obi and Chief Victor Umeh, Daily Sun gathered that it is not yet Uhuru for the party as there is bound to be another set of war, probably the last fight before the end of Governor Obi’s reign in Anambra State.

One out of the numerous cases that may pitch the duo against each other is the direction of the party in the November 16 governorship election where Mr. Obi had already started clamouring for power to shift to Anambra North as against the interests of Chief Victor Umeh to have a formidable force to fly the party’s flag in the election.

While Mr. Obi will like to actualize his dreams and fulfill his promises to hand over power to Anambra North senatorial zone at the end of his tenure to further cement the already contracted political marriage with the people, Chief Umeh as a seasoned politician will like to have a formidable force from the party irrespective of zone to fly the party’s flag to be able to compete in the governorship race.

If this was not part of the peace talk between Obi and Umeh, then the party is seriously heading towards another crisis especially as the local government and governorship elections are around the corner.
